When applying for a first job or internship, most people wonder what to write in a resume if they have no experience. The truth is that companies do not expect work experience from a fresher; they look for the willingness to learn, basic skills and hard work. Below are 12 easy tips. Follow them and build your resume with the free Resume Maker.

1. Keep it to one page

A fresher resume should be one page. Put the most important things at the top and keep the rest short.

2. State your goal in the Summary

In two or three lines say who you are and what kind of work you want. Example: “Final-year B.Tech Computer Science student interested in web development, having built small projects with HTML, CSS and JavaScript. I want to learn while working in a team where I can apply my skills to real work.”

3. Put education on top

If you have little experience, place the Education section right below the Summary. Write your degree, college, year and marks or CGPA. In Resume Maker the ▲ ▼ buttons on a section change the order easily.

4. Always add projects

College or self-made projects make up for missing experience. For each project write its name, what you built, what you used and the result. Add a section named Projects with “+ Entries Section”.

5. Include internships, volunteering and activities

Your role in a college committee, NSS, sports, cultural events or an online course also counts. It shows that you take responsibility.

6. Write only the skills you really have

List 6 to 10 genuine skills in the Skills section, such as MS Excel, communication, typing, HTML and CSS. Do not write anything you cannot explain in an interview.

7. Use numbers in bullet points

Instead of “Worked on a project” write “Built a website with a team of 4 that was used by more than 200 people”. Numbers show impact.

8. Choose a plain template

A plain single-column template such as Classic, Minimal or Executive is the safest for a fresher. Keep one color and a font that is easy to read.

9. Use a professional email

A name-based email such as firstname.surname@gmail.com is fine. Avoid nicknames or funny email addresses.

10. Adjust for every job

From the skills asked for in the advertisement, include the ones you have in Skills and in the Summary. This makes your resume look matched to that role.

11. Add a photo only when needed

Many companies do not require a photo. If you add one, use a clear, formal picture. In Resume Maker you can remove it any time by unticking “Show photo”.

12. Check again before sending

Re-read your name, phone number, email and dates. Ask a friend or teacher to read it once. Then create an A4 PDF with “PDF Download / Print” and give the file a proper name such as Rahul_Kumar_Resume.pdf.

Suggested section order for a fresher resume

  1. Name, title and contact
  2. Summary
  3. Education
  4. Projects
  5. Skills
  6. Internships or activities
  7. Languages
